PE

Intent

At St. Andrew’s Physical Education is high profile and we provide a curriculum that enables children to develop knowledge, skills and vocabulary in a broad range of sporting activities as well as developing core values such as teamwork, competition, fairness and respect.

We believe that it is important to engage the children in fun physical activities to develop a lifelong love of sport and exercise. We provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Our pupils have opportunities to compete in sport and other activities that build character and help embed the core values. They also have the opportunity to experience a wide range of sports which they practise to learn and develop new skills.

Implementation

Our PE programme incorporates a variety of sports to ensure all children develop confidence, tolerance and appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses. We work in partnership with City in the Community (Manchester City Football Club) and Primary Sports Coaching (PSC) to enhance the delivery of our PE lessons. All of our children take part in two high-quality PE lessons every week. Children are given the opportunity to practise skills in a variety of ways. We use planing from the Get Set 4 PE scheme to ensure there is appropriate breadth and depth to out PE curriculum; each lesson builds on skills previously taught, so that these can be embedded. We follow the National Curriculum, which encourages skills to be re-visited each year.  This improves children’s confidence and enjoyment.

In Key Stage 2, all children in Year 4 go to the local Leisure Centre where they take part in weekly swimming lessons taught by a qualified swimming instructor.  Lessons run throughout the year.  This provides children with the opportunity to develop confidence and acquire the necessary skills to stay safe in water.

We provide opportunities for children to engage in extracurricular sporting activities.  We take part in a range of competitive sporting events throughout the year.  This teaches children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play.

Impact

All of our children enjoy and participate in a variety of sports. Our lessons are inclusive, so that all children are able to enjoy success in developing skills. In addition we regularly take part in competitive sporting events and have been very successful in dodgeball, cross country and football.  Certificates and awards are celebrated each week in assembly and there are displays around school to promote and celebrate sport. Our staff signpost parents to local clubs and sporting facilities to enable their children to pursue developing interests or talents.  All staff regularly undertake CPD to ensure that they have the necessary skills and are up to date with current guidelines. The very positive impact which PE has on our children is evident in their mental and physical health. We hope that they grow up to live happy and healthy lives using the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
